Initial wheat trials show big boost in yields

Initial winter wheat variety trial results from HGCA point to a huge uplift in yield this year over the four year average. Control yields for 2014 are at 11.88 t/ha from the three trial sites harvested so far up 2 t/ha on the four year mean.

Yields range from 10.3 to 14.3 t/ha with the site in Suffolk returning some particularly high individual variety yields.

In the group 1 wheats the new contender Skyfall is outperforming the standards Solstice, Crusoe and Gallant. Group 2 contender Britannia is doing particularly well not just within the group but across the whole spectrum of varieties.

The new group 3 contenders are also showing their strengths over the more established varieties within this group. The feed group 4 are all currently returning respectable yields.
