Inaugural ‘Next Generation’ Sale is offering rare opportunities to pedigree breeders & commercial producers
Harrison & Hetherington are hosting the very first Simmental ‘Next Generation’ Sale, which is an exciting new fixture for all classes of pedigree Simmental females and 2021-born weaned calves. This one-day sale and show will be held on Friday 3rd December at Borderway Mart, Carlisle, and will feature some of the biggest names within the breed.
Over 80 animals have been entered for this inaugural sale, from vendors spanning all four home nations. The sale has attracted an eclectic mix of cattle from several of the top Simmental herds in the UK, and some of the genetics presented are amongst the very best in the breed which are rarely available at public auction. Notable herds entered in the sale include: Islavale, Denizes, Corskie, Atlow, Auchorachan, Popes, Newbiemains, Annick, Omorga, Strathisla, Kennox, Vale Royal, Key, Mavsey, Chestermann, Hepplewhite, Clearwater, Manor Park, Quarry Hill, Scotland Hill, Storersmith and Hemingford.

The day will begin with a pre-sale show at 9.30am, judged by Colin Inglis who runs the Greencap herd at Craegorry, Dalachy Farm, Aberdour. This will start with the females, followed by weaned calves with classes for bulls and heifers, and the sale set to begin at 11.30am. The aim of this fixture is to establish itself as a showcase for the Simmental breed that provides the quality, performance and genetics for the next generation cornerstone cattle in herds across the UK.
Commenting on the launch of the ‘Next Generation’ sale, Iain Kerr, General Manager for British Simmental said: “This sale represents a real opportunity for new herds, established herds and commercial producers to buy some of the finest quality Simmental cattle and we really hope it brings a whole new dynamic to the breed.
“With the rise in popularity of the breed this is a very timely point to launch this new fixture and to widen the reach and availability of British Simmental. We have cattle entered from several of the most reputable pedigree herds and some of the bloodlines being brought forward have never been brought to auction before, so this is the first opportunity to buy.
In recent years, British Simmental has established itself as one of the most profitable breeds in the beef industry and has all the attributes to be a ‘go-to mainstay’ of the commercial suckler herd across the UK. In addition to its premier and well-established maternal qualities, Simmental is the top Continental Beef Breed for Age at Slaughter, and with its growth advantages can deliver a green beef product with increased profitability.
Scott Donaldson, Director for Harrison & Hetherington added: “This is a very welcome addition to the pedigree calendar here at Borderway. Commercial producers are really starting to recognise the versatility and natural efficiencies of the Simmental breed, and this is driving pedigree sales and strong returns for Simmental influenced cattle in commercial rings.”
Potential buyers are welcome to view cattle on Thursday 2nd December between 5:30pm and 7:00pm. Free hospitality in the form of beef rolls and drinks will also be available.
Additionally, British Simmental has offered £75 towards membership costs to each purchaser who wishes to join the society following the sale as well as no transfer fees for any animals sold on the day.
The sale will also be available online with an option for online bidding. Buyers must be registered 48 hours prior to the sale. The online sale can be found here: harrisonandhetherington.co.uk.
