ICSA: Welcomes Opening Of 2025 Beef Welfare Scheme

ICSA Suckler chair Jimmy Cosgrave has welcomed the opening of the 2025 Beef Welfare Scheme and the increase in the number of eligible animals.

"This year's scheme is worth €28 million to the sector and offers straightforward, farmer-friendly actions aimed at improving calf welfare and animal performance. The modest increase in the number of animals eligible for payment is a positive step, but the ceiling still needs to go further to reflect the realities of suckler farming - particularly for those farming full-time," he said.

Under the 2025 Beef Welfare Scheme, farmers can earn:

  • Meal Feeding (Mandatory): 4 weeks pre-weaning and 2 weeks post-weaning. €35 per calf, up to 45 calves.
  • Vaccination (Optional): Against clostridial diseases and/or calf pneumonia. €15 per calf, up to 45 calves.
  • Faecal Testing / Forage Testing (Optional): Two faecal tests or three forage samples. €25 per calf, up to 45 calves.

When combined with the Suckler Carbon Efficiency Programme (SCEP), participants can receive up to €225 per cow/calf pair for the first 22 pairs.

Continuing Mr Cosgrave said, "There aren't many suckler farmers without money worries. Any scheme that provides practical measures and a financial boost is to be welcomed, and I would encourage all eligible suckler farmers to consider applying. However, ICSA wants to see the support package increased to €300 per cow/calf pair, alongside a higher number of eligible animals. That is what's needed to provide a sustainable income for full-time suckler farmers and safeguard the future of the sector."

The closing date for applications is 24 September 2025.
