IBERS smartphone app helps improve grass management
A smartphone app which allows farmers to calculate the grazing available to their livestock from a particular field or across their holding has been launched today at the Royal Welsh Show.
The farmGRAZE app, developed by a team from Aberystwyth University and based on the expertise of the university’s Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences (IBERS), was launched by Dr Christianne Glossop, Chief Veterinary Officer to the Welsh Government.
The app’s developers claim it will help farmers to manage livestock grazing more efficiently and save money on feed and fertiliser. FarmGRAZE is the result of a drive to transform research based ideas into mobile apps, according to Dr Rhian Hayward, a spokesperson for the university.
She elaborated, “As a university, we are in a strong position to realise the commercial value in our technologies and expertise. Transferring research into commercial products and services is of importance to us and I’m sure we will see many more apps developed in the future.”
A video demonstration of the application can be seen here.
