HGCA to review the impact of straw
An HGCA literature review aims to help growers answer the question of whether to chop or bale straw.
“As there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ answer, it is hoped that the results from this review will provide growers with the information needed to make the right choice for their particular circumstances,” stated Harley Stoddart, HGCA Research and Knowledge Transfer Manager.
Including both cereal and oilseed rape crop straw across a range of soil types, it is hoped the work will cover the impact on soil structure, organic matter, nutrition, subsequent cropping and profit.
“This desk-based review of existing research should take no longer than three months, ensuring that results are available to assist with decision-making at harvest 2013,” concluded Mr Stoddart.
Researchers are requested to present potential plans for conducting the review to the HGCA by 3 January 2013.
