HGCA roadmap aims to reduce arable sector emissions

HGCA has devised a Roadmap which aims to help the UK cereals and oilseeds industry to improve its performance in reducing the sector's contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. The roadmap also features information to help address environmental improvement targets.

Growing for the future – an environmental roadmap for UK cereals and oilseeds industry, constitutes part of HGCA's contribution to the industry’s Greenhouse Gas Action Plan, which it is hoped will result in a reduction in emissions from the sector.

The roadmap identifies where the major areas of emission are, and where the opportunities for improvements may lie. These include improving the efficiency of input utilisation, finding sustainable alternatives to fossil fuels, nitrogen fertilisers and other non-renewable minerals, either by using novel processes, techniques and by-products, or those from other areas of agriculture.

HGCA said it is confident the report will help ensure the arable sector meets government targets of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 11 percent by 2020.
