Help build an accurate picture of this year’s harvest with Harvest Results
This year, the Farming Online harvest Results survey, which has been running for over 15 years, will feature a number of improvements to increase accuracy and ease of use. Earlier in the year, Farming Online developed the Harvest Results App for smartphone users in association with Syngenta, to further facilitate the recording process.
The Harvest Results survey has run annually since it was first launched in 1998 and typically attracts data representing over 140,000 acres. Both the Harvest results App and Survey are now live and available to download or complete.
It is thought this year’s challenging weather events will impact upon yields throughout Europe, though early forecasts suggest farmers will benefit from calmer weather over the harvest period. Weather reports have this morning indicated the Jet Stream, a fast-flowing band of air approximately 7-12km up in the atmosphere, is moving north, which would suggest improvements in the UK’s weather.
However, medium to long term forecasts from the Met Office suggest that the weather may remain changeable and the South will be likely to see the best of any weather improvements. Forecasters have said that, although the UK has probably seen the worst of this summer’s weather, a “lengthy spell of hot, sunny weather does look unlikely.”
Harvest Results Improvements
The improvements to this year’s Harvest Results include the freely available Smartphone app as well as a mobile site for non-iPhone data submission. Furthermore, wheat data has been split into first and second wheats for the first time this season.
The Harvest Results App promises to revolutionise the largest independent benchmarking survey of the UK combinable Harvest. The free App delivers the most comprehensive yield analysis for each variety, area weighted and moisture adjusted. It also provides users with regional and national results.
The app provides benefit for farmers and those in the farming community by allowing pre-harvest data to be added, for comparison with post-harvest results, the first time such a service has been available on a mobile device. This means growers can enter the variety and area of crops in the ground and refer back to the data after harvest to add yield and moisture, all via iphone or mobile.
The app will store data even when out of connectivity range and submit it once the user is back within range.
