Greenpeace unveils food and farming manifesto
Environment organisation Greenpeace has released a report outlining its hopes for improving food production.
Greenpeace has offices in over forty countries worldwide, and receives backing from 2.9 million supporters worldwide (but won’t accept donations from governments, political parties or corporations). The charity, which has long campaigned on food as well as ecological issues, said it hopes its vision will help tackle an “agricultural crisis” being driven by a “broken food system” and is growing worse as climate change progresses.
Released in late May, the report outlines seven guiding principles to create “a modern food system that puts people and farmers at its heart”.
The seven key principles are:
- Farming for the benefit of people, not companies (food sovereignty);
- Allowing rural communities to thrive;
- Ensuring enough food is produced to feed everyone, and distributing food better;
- Encouraging biodiversity;
- Increasing soil fertility and maintaining clean water;
- Ecological pest control - reducing reliance on synthetic chemicals;
- and Creating a food system that can resist climate change.
The charity also asked its supporters to consider the food they eat, and support ecological farming that works towards this vision.
The report is available to read below.
