Greater Manchester farm hit by ‘tornado’

A farm near Bolton has been struck by a suspected tornado, which caused damage to farm buildings and a riding school. The storm, described by eyewitnesses as “a howling gale” lifted roofs from buildings and blew over vehicles and farm machinery when it hit yesterday afternoon.

The winds also affected other buildings and damaged trees in the nearby town of Darcy Lever. No people or animals were injured during the storm, however, a muckspreader and caravan were blown around and roofs were damaged on a stable building and barn.

Although the Met Office has not confirmed the occurrence, a spokesperson told the BBC this morning that the Bolton area had been hit by a ‘squall line’ on Wednesday, which may have caused the extreme conditions.
