Focus shifts to efficiency as milk prices fall

With several big processors announcing milk price reductions over the last few weeks, farmers need to turn their attention to efficient milk production to help recover price cuts, that’s according to feed manufacturer and nutrition experts HST Feeds.

Despite the price drops farmers should aim to maximise profitability throughout the summer, and take advantage of the good condition cows have finished in this winter.

“There are several key areas that can be monitored over the summer to make sure condition is maintained and profitable milk is being produced,” explained HST Feeds’ technical manager, Sion Richards.

“We have developed a series of checks for our customers which are designed to provide a rapid herd assessment and can identify any issues quickly.”

Sion advises that dairy herds should be assessed on a monthly basis for the following:

  • Feed rate – feed rate, cost per litre and milk from forage
  • Milk quality – fat to protein ratio and weight of milk solids
  • Fertility – numbers calved and numbers served
  • Condition score – check a minimum of 10% of milking herd monthly

“Performing these checks regularly, means a close eye is kept on the factors that influence and impact on cow performance during the summer. By comparing monthly results and identifying trends the checks will provide an early warning system to avoid either over or under feeding that will reduce the production of profitable milk,” concluded Sion.
