According to Tanya Dabnishka of the Bulgarian Farmers’ Association, the predicted 5 mmt of grain harvest for this season looks like an optimistic figure, and it is still hard to give clear predictions. Estimates of the Agriculture Ministry suggest that this year’s crops could be up to 20% lower than in 2013. Minister Grekov, however, assured there would be no shortage of grain, nor soaring prices. He added that farmers who have completely lost their harvest to the floods, will be compensated with up to 80% of its value.

Weather forecasters said the rains that fell in the eastern regions of Varna and Burgas in the end of June equalled the usual amount per month. A new bout of torrential rain hit the Bulgarian town of Dobrich on the afternoon of June 24, five days after the deadly floods that deluged Dobrich and part of Varna. Forecasters predicted more heavy rain in north-eastern Bulgaria later in the week.

On July 2, representatives of the Bulgarian Charities Aid Foundation, the Bulgarian Donors Forum and the Bulgarian Red Cross held a meeting to discuss co-ordination between the organisations to adequately support flood victims in Bulgaria.

In late May, neighbouring Balkan countries Serbia, Bosnia and Croatia were hit by the heaviest rainfall since records began 120 years ago. At least 40 people were killed.
