First hopefuls announced in NFUS elections

Farmers from Fife, Dumfries and Galloway, the Borders, South Lanarkshire and Perthshire have thrown their hats into the ring. Six candidates have confirmed that they will stand for posts on NFUS’s leadership team.

Three hopefuls are standing for president, including incumbent president Allan Bowie, who has served one of a possible two terms. Both of the union’s vice presidents are standing against Bowie: borders farmer Rob Livesey and Dumfriesshire farmer Andrew McCornick.

Three new candidates will contend the two vice president posts. They are Dumfries and Galloway Regional Chair, Gary Mitchell, Less Favoured Areas Committee Chair Martin Kennedy, who farms in Highland Perthshire, and NFUS’s Forth and Clyde Regional Chair Tom French.

Any NFU Scotland member can be nominated for election, providing they are proposed and seconded by fellow NFU Scotland members. Anyone wishing to stand as President or Vice President should contact NFUS Chief Executive Scott Walker to obtain a proposal form, which must then be signed and returned by Monday 12 December.

The election will be held at the Union’s Council meeting at the Radisson Blu Hotel, Glasgow on Tuesday 7 February 2017, following the Union’s AGM and annual dinner, which will also be held at the hotel.
