Festival of Heavy Horses debuts at Bath and West Show
For the first time the Royal Bath and West Show is welcoming the Festival of Heavy Horses, offering visitors a rare chance to get up close to some of the largest and most iconic equine breeds in the UK.
The concept was created by heavy horse enthusiast Diana Mcfeat and came from the idea to bring all of the UK's heavy horse breeds together in one place. "All of these horses are rare breeds," she explains. "The individual societies do a brilliant job, but they naturally focus on their own breed. I wanted to showcase them all together, so the public can see them side by side."
Designed to be an interactive experience, the festival invites visitors to do more than just watch. "The whole point is allowing people to get up close and personal," Mrs Mcfeat says. "You can meet the horses, talk to the owners and really experience them. They have such a presence, there really is nothing else like them."
From in-hand showing to driven displays, the programme will highlight both the heritage and evolving role of heavy horses.
Adding to the spectacle, Martin Clunes will appear on Thursday morning, bringing his well-known passion for heavy horses to the showground. A long-time owner of Clydesdales, he is expected to draw crowds with his enthusiasm and knowledge of the breed.
Throughout the festival, expert commentary will provide deeper insight into the history and working lives of these animals. Among those sharing their expertise is ring commentator Peter Clark MBE, whose decades of experience bring to life the vital role heavy horses once played in agriculture and wartime efforts. "Years ago, a handler would walk up to 10 miles to plough just one acre," Diana explains. "It really puts into perspective the work these horses did."
Beyond their history, heavy horses continue to leave a lasting impression on those who encounter them. Known for their calm temperament as well as their strength, they have even been used in therapeutic settings, working with children and demonstrating a remarkable level of gentleness.
"I want people to come away with that wow factor," says Diana. "Find a spot by the ring, feel the ground as they move, hear the harness, and just take it all in. They're powerful, but they're also incredibly kind. They're unforgettable."
The Royal Bath & West Show will take place at The Showground, Shepton Mallet, Somerset BA4 6QN, from 28–30 May.
