Farming Minister promotes British food in Middle East

Speaking in Dubai, where he is promoting food from British producers, Agriculture Minister Jim Paice said there are growing opportunities for producers, backed by Defra, to sell their products to expanding markets outside of Europe.

Speaking in January at the Oxford Farming Conference, Defra secretary Caroline Spelman said British producers should capitalise on the reputation for good genetics, animal welfare and high quality standards to find new markets in China, India and South America. Ms Spelman’s announcement was made ahead of a government drive to boost exports, in the hope of generating economic growth and creating jobs.

Mr Paice today visited one of Asia’s biggest food and hospitality trade shows, where 60 UK companies were exhibiting their cheese, chocolate, crisps, curry and other British classics. He also met Ministers from the United Arab Emirates for talks aimed at developing trade between the UK and the UAE.

Mr Paice said, “From cheese to chocolate our foods are already known the world over for their quality. Successful, vibrant places like the Middle East represent a fantastic opportunity for growth.”

Defra claims the rising world population is creating a growing demand for Western products in high growth economies, presenting British producers with “significant opportunities” for expansion. UK food exports grew for the sixth year in a row in 2010, rising 12.2 per cent to £16.1bn.
