Farming insurer strengthens commitment to industry

Farming insurance specialist Cornish Mutual has announced a significant shift in business focus in response to the current challenges faced by the industry.

A risk survey carried out by the organisation last year highlighted many farmers were concerned about removal of farming subsidies, changes to environmental schemes, climate change and high input prices, but unsure where to get good advice.

"We want to make things better, not just send out cheques when something goes wrong," said managing director Peter Beaumont. "While the classic insurance response might be to diversify to other sectors, we remain committed to agriculture."

Instead, the business was expanding into services beyond insurance products to those that would help farmers manage risk and build business profitability and resilience, increase natural resources and protect people, he explained.

"Working in partnership with technology companies means we can give members access to cutting edge products such as the Quanturi HAYTECH probe we launched earlier this year."

Advice provision will also play an important part, with the launch of its first service focusing on health and safety, he said. This has included publication of a free guide with policy templates as well as a paid-for service for those needing in-depth advice and support.

"Farmers undoubtedly have a bumpy road ahead and many are making significant changes to their businesses as a result.

"We hope by providing a wider set of services, alongside strengthening our commitment to agriculture, we will help our members find a way forward through the industry challenges."
