The NFU has opened its doors to a group of local job seekers, giving them the opportunity to gain the skills they need to get into work. 

They will spend the day at NFU headquarters in Stoneleigh today (Wednesday) talking to NFU employees about life at the organisation and potential career opportunities and development in agriculture. They will also participate in a CV workshop to help them develop their employability skills. 

It is part of the Feeding Britain's Future – Skills for Work week campaign which is being driven by IGD. The initiative will see businesses across the food and grocery industry supply chain open their doors, giving young people access to farms, factories and stores, and firsthand knowledge of the skills needed for a career in the industry.

NFU Vice President Adam Quinney said: "Farming is a great career choice, offering a huge variety of opportunities in providing the building blocks to the UK's food and drink industry.  That is why I am delighted the NFU is supporting the campaign to promote the diverse range of jobs and skills in the industry.  It also resonates with our own campaign Farming Delivers for Britain which highlights the tremendous opportunities that farming and the food industry will create for young people in the future.

"The farming industry workforce rose by around 10,000 between 2010 and 2011, which just shows how vibrant and dynamic an industry it is. We want as many people as possible to be aware of the possibilities that farming presents, especially during such tough economic conditions.

"With that in mind, we think that these young people will really benefit from spending the day at the NFU, and we hope that some of them will leave"
