Farmers Have Key Role to Play in a Future Sustainable Energy System

Following on from the launch of the Re-Fuelling the Countryside report, the Royal Agricultural Society of England is set to host a dedicated showcase at Nextgen between the 8th-9th October, highlighting low carbon vehicles and opportunities for renewable fuels on farms and in rural areas.

Nextgen is a renewable energy generation event with an exhibition and conference, it is held at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire.

The Re-Fuelling the Countryside showcase will feature an interactive area for visitors to come and discuss their renewable energy options with experts from across the UK. As well as being able to talk to various exhibitors, RASE will host a panel discussion demonstrating case studies in the Agri-Rural Theatre.

Transport fuels from renewable sources have the potential to reduce UK energy costs, to improve air quality and to address energy security if low carbon vehicle technologies are advanced, if market barriers are adequately addressed and is a supportive investment environment is created to encourage the necessary infrastructure.

Farms are ideally placed to exploit the opportunities for fossil fuel replacement both from a supplier and a user perspective and some are beginning to explore the options.

Farmers, rural businesses and the wider industry are encouraged to come along to engage with low vehicle suppliers, renewable fuel companies and hear first hand case studies on the benefits and opportunities that exist in producing renewable fuel.

RASE CEO David Gardner says: “"There is no doubt that the farm of the future will be very different to that of today. In recent years, agriculture and energy production have become increasingly interlinked.

“The farm of the future has the potential to become an important source of renewable fuel and energy, as well as food. It could be the centre of the local community, supplying energy to neighbours sourced from renewable technology on the farm. This “energy farm” might also serve a local rural vehicle refuelling station delivering renewable fuels.”

Registration for the event is free.
