Farmers back protests over milk prices

Faced with falling prices and a perceived lack of support from government, farmers meeting in Market Drayton, Shropshire on Thursday voted overwhelmingly to resume a campaign of direct action.

Almost 400 farmers attended the meeting in North Shropshire, which was called in response to ongoing price cuts, including a 1.8 pence per litre cut by Muller-Wiseman, which is based in Market Drayton. Some major processors have announced cuts for three consecutive months.

Farmers have said that, though dairy prices are down across the world, their problems have been compounded by the price cuts and the impacts of the Russian trade embargo, which came into effect in early August.

The meeting was convened by protest group Farmers for Action, which last month called on the UK government to act on the Russian trade ban by buying back or redistributing milk from dairy farmers. FFA led blockades of processors and supermarket distribution hubs in 2012 and 2013 over cuts to farm-gate prices.

Speaking to the BBC, FFA Spokesperson Paul Rowbottom said, "If we need to take positive action to make the processors realise the situation of these price cuts then that will be the next move."

A spokesperson for dairy industry trade association Dairy UK said "disruptive protests are in nobody's interest."

FFA will hold another meeting in Carmarthen on Thursday 25th Sept.
