European pig Prices: prices constant or lower
Many major European pig producers have continued to see steady prices this week, according to German pig body ISN. ISN analysts reported that no changes have been seen in quotes for pigs for slaughter in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Spain and Denmark.
Elsewhere in Europe, prices have been less consistent. Fluctuating prices in France, where there has been severe unrest amongst pig producers over the past year, are this week favouring producers, following a two cents drop in average prices at the beginning of the month. However, prices remain one cent below expectations.
Throughout Europe demand remains lower; ISN said, “The necessary stimulus is still missing for price increases throughout Europe. In northern and central Europe in particular, the unsettled weather conditions are dimming the consumers’ mood.” Furthermore, effects of the economic crisis are translating into reduced demand for meat in the South. Retailers and caterers are reporting reduced demand for pig meat, as well as for beef and lamb.
However, a smaller quantity of available pigs mature for slaughter, especially in Germany, means marketers are currently experiencing problems with meeting the slaughter companies’ demand. The German analysts claimed this, along with improving weather and forthcoming public holidays, may result in prices increasing in the near future.
