European pig market: prices stable
In line with predictions made last week, there have been few price changes in the European market this week, according to analysts from German pig industry group ISN. Quotations for mature-pigs-for-slaughter have generally supported producers, particularly in Southern Europe.
In Spain Italy and, surprisingly France, where until recently markets have been distinctly unfavourable, demand is up compared to supply. ISN said slaughter weights have been on a downward trend over the past few weeks, which, in conjunction with healthy demand from the slaughter companies, has led to prices rises.
France saw prices 5 cents higher this week and Belgium recorded a one cent increase. In Northern and Central Europe, the atmosphere is less favourable, but remains steady nonetheless. For most European states, including Denmark, Austria and the Netherlands, domestic and third country market opportunities remain healthy.
However, most states did not record any changes in prices. ISN said this stability is likely to persist over the summer, with little in the way of price changes predicted over the next few weeks.
