EU referendum set for June

On Friday evening, Prime Minister David Cameron announced that he had negotiated a reform deal with colleagues in the European Union, which Cameron said would grant the UK a special position in the Union of 28 states.

After the PM’s negotiations drew to a close, he also announced the date of the referendum on EU membership, which had been promised before the end of 2017. The referendum has been set for 23rd June, and with polls currently suggesting only a small majority of Britons are in favour of continued EU membership, the outcome is far from certain.

Agreements reached on Friday included reducing EU regulation on the City of London, Britain’s financial powerhouse, and further restrictions on benefits for workers from the EU residing in the UK.

Over the weekend, EU Council President Donald Tusk said the deal aimed at keeping the UK within the bloc had gained unanimous support from the other 27 states.

Since Mr Cameron’s announcement, a number of senior Tories have come out in favour of leaving the EU, including farming minister and former UKIP candidate George Eustice and London Mayor Boris Johnson. On Monday, Cameron is set to present the case for reminding part of the EU to MPs.
