EU Referendum: June opinion poll

On 23 June, Britons will go to the polls to decide whether the country should leave the European Union or remain.

Current opinion polls are suggesting the vote will be a tight one, with just a few percentage points’ margin between the ‘Leave’ and ‘Remain’ camps, both of which have come under fire for the negative focus of their campaign message. In the build up to this month’s referendum, Farming Online has run a series of polls to gauge attitudes within the agricultural sector.

A final poll is now open, and we hope to gain an insight into farmers’ feelings as the referendum nears. Results from the poll will be shared ahead of the referendum later this month.

the overall sentiment within farming has proven difficult to pin down, with different polls giving differing results; an online poll which has been running on the Farmers’ Weekly website since February shows 67% support for the Leave campaign, whilst figures released by the NFU in early May showed 43% of NFU members quizzed in spring 2016 were unsure whether UK agriculture’s interests were best served within the EU (36% said they would opt to remain, 21% would choose to leave).

Though the UK’s major farm unions have backed the Remain camp, they have refused to actively campaign on the issue.

Results from previous Farming Online polls, which each ran for a week and gathered between 350 and 450 responses showed a slight, but steady increase in support for the Remain vote, whilst the Leave vote has stayed around the same, with a higher proportion of farmers backing the Leave camp. The results so far are as follows:

  • In February 49% of respondents said they would opt for ‘Brexit’, whilst 34 said they would choose to remain part of the EU and 17% percent were still undecided.
  • In April, 51% said they would like Britain to leave the EU, 37% would prefer to remain, and 12% remained unsure.
  • In May, 50% were in favour of Brexit, 41.5% want Britain to remain part of the EU and 8.5% were undecided.
