EU pig prices remain stable
Analysts from German pig producers' organisation ISN have said the EU market remains stable, following an FAO report showing prices had stagnated or fallen in the meat sector.
ISN analysts said that, on the European pigs-mature-for-slaughter markets, stable conditions are prevailing almost without exception this week. The quantities on offer are well demanded despite the missing days of slaughter.
In France, the quantities on offer are reported to be slightly declining. Since fewer pigs were demanded over the holidays in the country, prices there have remained level.
The Spanish market is also reported to be well balanced; prices had remained constant for two weeks before Easter. There was no movement either way in the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark and Austria.
Demand and supply are also well balanced in Germany, according to the German analysts. Although trade is far from optimal, demand remains respectable. There is also hope for increasing prices on the horizon, as barbeque season approaches. However, current weather conditions are not promising.
The forecast is for steady prices to continue throughout Europe.
