EU pig prices: stability continues

This week, the situation appears have remained stable in the EU pigs-mature-for-slaughter markets. In southern Europe, the demand remains brisk on the part of slaughter companies.

German industry body ISN said that, with the onset of more autumnal weather across Europe, pigs are once again reaching necessary slaughter weight within a shorter period of time, benefitting producers.

Although there have been no price increases in Southern and Central Europe for the first time in months, prices have remained steady. ISN said that in Mid and Western-Europe, shortfalls in supply are lower than last year and slaughter companies remain eager to purchase whatever is available. Analysts said “The good demand must above all be attributed to the high demand for processed meat such as belly and bacon.”

In Northern Europe, the situation continues to improve for producers.  A 3 cents’ price increase was reported in Denmark, where business demand for domestic and export markets remains strong. ISN said the rise for Danish producers was “long overdue. After all, the Danish quotation was outrun over the past weeks by other large exporting nations’ quotations, such as the Spanish and the German ones.”

The outlook for coming weeks remains stable, according to ISN, with supply and demand well balanced.
