EU pig prices: price drops on slaughter company pressure

According to German pig industry group ISN, the European mature pigs market has taken another downturn. After some slaughter companies demanded clear price reductions in Germany last week, supply increased and value fell across central Europe.

Quotations in Germany dropped by 5 cents, affecting returns in the Netherlands, Belgium and Austria, which were also caught in the downwards pull.

According to the Austrian Verband landwirtschaftlicher Veredelungsproduzenten OÖ (agricultural upgrading producers), quantities of mature pigs were completely sold until producers were undercut by their German neighbours, which stirred up the market led to a 1.5 cents reduction.

In France and Spain, weakening seasonal prices seen in past weeks continued. After the quotation went down in Germany, France moved up to second place in the European price structure of the five major pig-keeping countries, ahead of Germany, with a corrected 1.651 euros.

In Britain, process remained steady.

ISN analysts were uncertain of possible future developments in European markets on Tuesday.
