Environment Agency seeks to protect River Ithon

The Environment Agency Wales has announced it will be holding a poultry muck management talk for farmers in Powys with the aim of reducing run-off and protecting the River Ithon from pollution.

The River Ithon, which is an important spawning area for salmon, is currently failing quality targets under the European Water Framework Directive. The Agency said the talk would help farmers to get the most from their land and will feature speakers including grassland specialist Charlie Morgan.

The Ithon catchment, which contains farms producing 16 per cent of Britain's free-range eggs as well as other farms, is a sensitive area, where run-off from the farms can cause serious pollution to the river if not managed correctly.

Ioan Williams of Environment Agency Wales said, "We have already visited a number of farms in the Ithon catchment and farmers have been really grateful for our advice. Muck management helps to protect the health of the River Ithon and also makes financial sense for poultry farmers. We hope this talk will help more farmers to improve management of their land and prevent run-off."

The talk will be held on 30th August at the Severn Arms in Penybont, Llandrindod Wells at 7pm.
