Early start leads to early close for UK asparagus crop
6 June 2011
The early start to Britain’s asparagus season has led to an early winding down, sooner than the season’s usual close towards the end of the month. While it began promisingly a fortnight before its ‘official’ start date, weather woes meant the season will culminate with only a slight increase on last year’s crop
The official season for English asparagus runs from 24th April to 21st June, however this is variable due to the changeable nature of the British climate.
Production may continue into July for a handful of growers. While the season was expected to be a good one, judged by April’s climatic conditions, variable weather, including frosts in May, hampered the crop somewhat, leading to a smaller yield than anticipated.
