Spring mis-management of semi-dwarfs could be costing growers a significant yield penalty, believes Dr Pete Berry, principal research scientist at ADAS High Mowthorpe. “Yet with conventional varieties, growers are increasingly reaping the benefits of managing their crop canopies correctly.” Independent trials, conducted by ADAS and funded by HGCA, GrowHow and Bayer CropScience, show semi-dwarf varieties can benefit from exactly the same approach. “Indeed, failing to do so could result in over 0.75t/ha of yield being squandered –– worth more than £300/ha at current prices.
