Crème de la crème of dairy comes to the North

Some of the industry’s best dairy genetics will be on show next month as Harrison and Heatherington’s Borderway Mart, Carlisle prepares to host one of the top Holstein events.

The Black and White Sale, held on Saturday 1st December, is an international event which will offer dairy genetics from as far as Germany, Holland and France. With 90 lots on offer, there’s should be something for every dairy enthusiast, including genetics from some of the best milking cows and heifers. In addition, young heifers ready to flush, heifers from the most prolific breeding cows as well as embroys will be up for grabs.

This year will see the first ever Milking Shorthorn too, a sight not seen in the twenty six years the event has run. The Shorthorn, Sunrise Relflection Marica, comes from across the sea in Ireland, her dam being the first heifer in milk at Balmoral this spring and one of the best young cows in the UK.

Another one to watch is Lot 25, Lynholme Gold Wishes, who was the Northern Dairy Expo Junior Champion for 2012.

While the dairy industry has had a turbulent year, the day is expected to create much excitement and energy among the industry as the crème de la crème of the dairy industry assembles to view some of the finest registered dairy cattle.

Glyn Lucas, Harrison & Hetherington’s Head Pedigree Dairy said; “The industry has progressed to amazing heights with the advent of genomics, in-vitro fertilization and sexed embryos and the Black & White sale is the single best stage for breeders in the UK to market their animals. Each lot has the ability to be the next great show winner, bull mother, genomic chart topper, embryo donor or brood cow. They will all have an impact on the breed for many years to come.”
