Cornish dairy recalls contaminated milk
On Monday, the dairy recalled whole, semi and skimmed milk (dated 25th and 26th August), liquid cream and clotted cream (dated 26th and 27th August) after milk was contaminated with "a small amount of cleaning product" on one of the farms supplying the dairy.
Trewithen Manager and founding Director Bill Clarke said, "We are not aware of any danger to health due to the vast dilution of the liquid. However, we are taking all possible steps and precautions and have acted immediately with an instant withdrawal and replacement for products that may have been affected. "
Clarke continued, "The precise traceability systems we have in place at the dairy means we know exactly which customers have received these products and are now collecting and replacing anything at risk."
The contamination was only discovered when customers complained about the taste of certain products to the Cornish dairy, which supplies some major supermarkets.
The Trewithen director added that environmental health and the Food Standards Agency have been informed and are "supportive" of the company's actions. He said that any consumers who have bought Trewithen products with the at-risk dates can return them to their retailer for a free replacement.
Even so, a spokesperson for Cornwall Council's Environmental Health team urged anyone who has consumed contaminated milk to seek medical advice on Tuesday.
The dairy said its other products, including butter, crème fraiche and yoghurt, had not been affected.
