Clocks go back and the thieves come out

As we put the clocks back this weekend and the nights get longer this gives thieves added opportunity to siphon away your fuel.

Farmers are targeted by professional fuel thieves and extra vigilance is needed to safeguard your farm. Fuel on farm continues to be a regular target for thieves and there is still a high incidence of tanks being targeted. Security and access are key points in trying to prevent theft so following a few simple rules may help.

• Site tanks in such a way that unauthorised vehicle access is restricted when the site is unattended

• Site the tank inside an area of palisade fencing, a steel container or building and secure with security locks. Ensure adequate ventilation if tank is in a container or building

• Site tank in a position that is highly visible which creates natural and direct surveillance

• Secure all areas and buildings where tanks are sited with alarms and security lighting

• Do not allow unknown visitors onto your farm – they may be casing it and locating your fuel tanks

• Thieves like to take the easy option so make it difficult for them to get access to your tank!

Nigel Collen, fuel product manager at Anglia Farmers, has a further solution:

“Fuel cards are a good alternative to storing derv and petrol on site or at least reducing the quantity stored. They are a cost effective way of purchasing derv and petrol and can be used at 98 per cent of filling stations across the UK.”
