Challenging conditions forcing innovative approach to field work

Recent heavy rainfall, following as it does the wettest spring and summer on record in the UK, has led to more flooding, waterlogging and generally created challenging conditions across swathes of the country.

Throughout the country, farmers harvesting maize silage and root crops have struggled with persistent wetness this year. Heavy rainfall, in combination with cool temperatures, has created difficult field conditions and precipitated official warnings to keep roads mud-free.

Although many farmers have access to flotation tyres to help cope with the worst of the weather’s effects, there have been reports that some farmers have resorted to using manure spreaders to gather silage from fields. Given the current conditions, and the promise of more adverse weather to come over the weekend and into next week, farmers in affected areas are understandably concerned about the impact on harvesting and cultivation activities.
