Britain braces for hurricane: Katia set to hit Northern Ireland, UK mainland

Hurricane Katia is moving across the Atlantic, heading for the UK. The storm will hit Britain and Ireland between Sunday evening and Tuesday if it remains on its current course.

While it remains too early to give an accurate forecast, farmers, especially in coastal regions in the North and in Western Scotland, should be prepared for a potential spell of extremely wet, windy weather.

A Met Office spokesperson said meteorologists in the UK were keeping “a close eye” on Katia, which is currently off the coast of Bermuda. He added, “It’s too early to say where it’s going to go but we’re constantly monitoring the situation and advising people to stay up to date with the forecasts.”

In the last few minutes, the Met Office has issued a "yellow" alert , advising people to be aware of the risk of a "high impact" weather system. Katia would be the first hurricane to hit the UK since August 1986 when Hurricane Charley brought torrential rain to Wales and parts of central and Northern England.
