Biomethane: rural fuel of the future?

The Royal Agricultural Society of England (RASE) is hosting a seminar at ADBA on 2nd July looking at biomethane as a transport fuel for farms and rural areas.

The seminar comes hot off the heels of the recently launched RASE’s Re-Fuelling the CountrysideReport. The Report looks at the opportunities and challenges associated with upgrading biogas to biomethane for farm and rural transport. 'Re-Fuelling the Countryside:  the prospects for low carbon farm and rural transport fuels' suggests farm sourced renewable energy including biogas, electric, hydrogen and biofuels could all have uses as transport fuels of the future for farms and rural communities.

It identifies that a stable policy environment is critical for the progression of low emission vehicles, with a need for greater emphasis directed towards farm and community scale renewable energy and transport fuel projects. A funded programme of information exchange and data sharing is also required through the demonstration of successful case studies, tours and visits.

As well as an overview of the findings of the report, the RASE seminar on the 2nd July will host Alan Midwinter from Scotia Gas Networks and Will Llewellyn from Evergreen Gas.

Alan will talk about the prospects of gas to grid and the development of a green gas supply in the UK.

With a demonstration site in Shropshire, the practicalities of small scale upgrading of biogas to biomethane for transport fuel will be discussed by Will.

The seminar will take place in the Purple Seminar Theatre between 10.00 to 10.55am on Tuesday 2nd July. UK AD & Biogas is free to attend and runs from 2-3 July 2014 at Hall 3 of the NEC, Birmingham.

The Re-Fuelling the Countryside Report has been supported by the Frank Parkinson Trust, Scotia Gas Network and Cenex and prepared by Greenwatt Technology Ltd.
