Bee disease found in Scotland

A disease outbreak has been located in Scotland which could affect honey bee's significantly.

Americal Fouldbreed (AFB), caused by spore-forming bacteria which kills bees, has been located in an apiary in Tarland, Aberdeenshire.

The disease, which has no permitted treatment in the UK, was found during the Scottish Government's surveillance programme about disease and husbandry factors affecting the bee's across Scotland.

The infected hive however has been destroyed

The Scottish Government said: “There are no risks to public health from AFB and no implications for the quality and safety of honey. The movement of bees and related equipment into or out of the affected apiary are under specific controls.”

Bee farmers and beekeepers are being urged to be vigilant about the disease, and maintain good husbandry practices.
