BASIS Announces Luke Mills as Barrie Orme Shield Winner

BASIS has named Luke Mills, Development Agronomist at Agrii, as the winner of the 2025 Barrie Orme Shield, sponsored by BASF, awarded for his exceptional performance during his BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection (Agriculture) examination. Luke was trained by James Christian-Ilett.

Growing up in Hertfordshire without a farming background, Luke developed a strong interest in agriculture and crop production from an early age. He studied BSc (Hons) Agriculture with Crop Management at Harper Adams University before gaining practical experience on arable farms and joining Agrii in 2024.
Luke undertook the BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection to strengthen his technical understanding of integrated pest management (IPM) and crop production. He now works as a Development Agronomist across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire, supporting growers and continuing to build his agronomy and seed customer base.
Reflecting on his achievement, Luke said: "I'm humbled and extremely honoured to have won the Barrie Orme Award for 2025. Studying the BASIS Certificate in Crop Protection IPM helped cement the wider knowledge needed for the day-to-day role as an agronomist working with farmers.
Joel Johnson, Regional Business Director at BASF, who presented the award, said: "We're incredibly proud to sponsor the Barrie Orme Shield, an award that recognises outstanding technical expertise, best practice and real impact in the field. It's a reflection of the highest standards our industry aspires to and the efforts of the people who consistently champion them. It's also a pleasure to personally congratulate Luke on his success, a truly well-deserved achievement"
The runner-up for the Barrie Orme Shield 2025 was Lucy Jackson of Defra, recognised for her strong performance in the BASIS Horticulture course and her work in plant health and pest management.
