BASF calls on UK farmers to share rodent control challenges as resistance grows

Leading pest management solutions manufacturer,  BASF [https://www.pestcontrol.basf.co.uk/en/], has relaunched its nationwide survey into rodent control on farms and is calling on UK farmers to share their experiences.

The  survey [https://form.jotform.com/252962755129062], which takes just a few minutes to complete, explores how farmers currently manage rodents, the challenges they face, and the types of pest control programmes in use across the sector.

With growing evidence that early second-generation anticoagulant baits containing bromadiolone and difenacoum are losing effectiveness with the increase of anticoagulant resistance in both rats and mice. BASF hopes the results will highlight which rodenticides farmers prefer today, as well as identify areas where resistance may be spreading.

The findings will be compared with results gathered in previous years to build a clearer picture of how rodent control practices are evolving and to provide valuable insight into the shifting use of rodenticides on UK farms.

The survey comes at a particularly important time for farmers, with new rodenticide regulations coming into effect in January 2026. These changes are expected to restrict the availability of certain rodenticide products to those without professional certifications, while placing greater emphasis on integrated pest management (IPM) and environmental deterrents.

For many farmers, this will mean adapting existing rodent control strategies, undertaking further training, or potentially seeking external help from professional pest controllers, and strengthening preventative measures to remain compliant while keeping infestations under control.

Laurence Barnard, Country Business Manager for Professional & Specialty Solutions at BASF, said:

“This survey is an important opportunity to understand the realities of rodent control on farms right now. The insight we gather will not only help us monitor resistance trends but also allow us to share best practice more effectively and support farmers in tackling infestations quickly.

“Effective rodent control helps protect property, machinery, animal welfare and livelihoods by reducing damage, minimising losses and preventing the spread of disease. With new regulations on the horizon, gaining a clearer picture of on-farm pest management today is more important than ever. We’re encouraging farmers to take a few minutes out of their day to contribute to this vital piece of research.”
