Australian Auctioneer Joins Harrison & Hetherington for UK Internship
Harrison & Hetherington are pleased to welcome Jack Harper, a 23-year-old livestock auctioneer from Australia, who has arrived in the UK to gain first-hand experience of the British livestock auctioneering industry. Jack's placement with Harrison & Hetherington is an opportunity for him to learn about livestock trading in the UK, and to compare and contrast livestock markets between the northern and southern hemispheres.
Jack, originally from Cowra, New South Wales, has been working as an auctioneer for three years and an agent for five with Allan Gray & Co., a well-respected agency specialising in prime lambs and cattle. Coming from a region known for high-quality stock but not necessarily high volumes, he is eager to immerse himself in the UK market, which operates on a different scale and with different breeds of stock and different sales practices.
Commenting on his placement, Jack said, "In Australia, we primarily handle commercial stock, with a few pedigree ram sales, so spending time with Harrison & Hetherington will be an entirely new experience. The UK livestock market is fascinating, and I've already noticed the similarities and differences in how auctions are conducted. It's exciting to see the structure, different trading practices and pricing dynamics here, and I will take these observations back home for consideration."
Jack plans to stay in the UK until the end of the year, aiming to refine his auctioneering skills and deepen his understanding of the UK livestock industry. He is particularly keen to observe the diversity of breeds and the various approaches to livestock sales, which he believes will be invaluable for his career progression back in Australia.
Despite not coming from a farming background, Jack's passion for agriculture and auctioneering has driven him to explore new opportunities. His employer back home fully supports his placement, recognising the benefits of gaining international experience.
"The auction system is something I love – building anticipation and securing the best possible prices for clients. This opportunity with Harrison & Hetherington allows me to expand my horizons and develop professionally in a market that operates differently from what I'm used to," he added.
His journey to the UK was a stroke of good fortune. After researching the UK Livestock Association, Jack connected with Harrison & Hetherington who saw the value in bringing an Australian perspective to their own operations.
Robin Anderson, Harrison & Hetherington Managing Director welcomes Jack, "We are delighted to have Jack on board and look forward to sharing knowledge and best practices across continents. In spending time with us, it will hopefully enhance his career and encourage collaboration between our own livestock auctioneers."
