Asparagus harvest falters on variable weather

Following a premature start to the season, where thanks to a March heat wave the earliest ever asparaguses were harvested in the country, the British asparagus season has faltered.

Although rain and cooler weather at the end of April has delayed the remainder of the harvest by an estimated nine days, there is no sign the hiccough has dented appetites for asparagus. As one of the only crops in the UK to have retained an element of seasonality, asparagus enjoys premium prices during its short season.

Last season, British shoppers spent in excess of £23 million on the vegetable.
