Farming News - ASF spreads in Latvia

ASF spreads in Latvia

African Swine Fever has been detected on farms and in villages in Latvia, having been discovered in wild boar earlier in the year.

Latvia was the third EU country in which the disease was detected, after Poland and Lithuania detected ASF in wild boar populations in February. Latvia's chief veterinary officer reported to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) in late June that ASF had been detected in three wild boar in the country, near to the border with Belarus.

However on 5th August, the disease was identified on a pig farm in Kraslava County, where 187 animals had to be destroyed to prevent further spread, after nine succumbed. Since then, more wild boar and pigs in Latvian villages have tested positive.

In all, 13 new cases have been detected since the beginning of August, leading to the death or destruction of 207 swine and 11 boar. The disease has apparently spread north and throughout much of Eastern Latvia.

Defra's International Disease Monitoring (IDM) team have assessed the situation, and reported in The BMJ's Veterinary Record, which can be viewed here
