Aldi UK confirms pesticides review

Supermarket chain Aldi UK has announced it is reviewing its pesticides policy, after coming under pressure from environmental campaigners.

The move by Aldi’s UK group follows a ban on certain pesticides used on fruit and vegetables by the retailer’s parent company, Aldi Süd, in January.  Aldi Süd’s ban in Germany was introduced in light of increasing evidence of the effects of certain products on bee health.

Aldi UK operates independently from its parent company so Aldi Süd’s decision didn’t apply to the UK supermarket, but on Thursday, the retailer informed green campaign group Friends of the Earth of its intention to review its own pesticide policy.

In a statement given to Friends of the Earth, Aldi UK said, “The aim of this review is to establish an Aldi UK position on pesticide usage that will take our approach beyond the status quo, particularly in relation to pollinators.”

Friends of the Earth welcomed the review and is mobilising its supporters to push for a ban. FoE’s Bees campaigner Dave Timms said, “This review is welcome but Aldi’s new policy must include a strong commitment to keep neonicotinoid pesticides out of the production of its fruit, vegetable and cereals including wheat and oilseed rape. It’s vital that consumers let Aldi know that they expect them to act to protect our threatened bees.”

On Tuesday, and Aldi spokesperson said, "We are currently reviewing our pesticides policy to find an approach that is suitable for UK farmers and growers.  This review is due to be completed later this year."
