Agriculture only sector reporting wage drop on Jersey

Workers in agriculture on Jersey have suffered a 3.1 per cent wage drop over the past year. The agriculture industry is the only sector to suffer such a drop on the island, according to figures released by the States of Jersey.

The figures show average wages have risen in every sector except farming, though worryingly rises in average pay have remained below inflation, meaning increases in the cost of living have outpaced earnings. The cost of living on Jersey has increased by twice as much as the average pay rise in the past year.

The drop in agricultural wages has been blamed on reduced glasshouse horticulture and flower nurseries on the Island.
