Agreed Earth secures funding to help farmers reduce their reliance on nitrogen fertilizers
Agreed Earth, the AgTech company that helps farmers reduce their reliance on Nitrogen through regenerative farming techniques, has received an investment from Regenerate Ventures.
Agreed Earth uses remote sensing technology to accurately generate an auditable health index, based on the usage of nitrogen containing chemicals. This means farmers can monitor their progress towards operating a lower nitrogen farm and it allows banks to lend to them more easily by reducing the risk associated with their loan books because farms are less likely to go bankrupt in the long-term. The service also enables banks to comply with the SDR (sustainable disclosure requirements) imposed by the Financial Conduct Authority.
The Agreed Earth platform also provides education and best-practice advice on how to reduce costs by using less nitrogen-based fertilizer and transitioning to regenerative agriculture practices. Regenerative agriculture focuses on building and maintaining good soil health, which means that farmers can maintain yields as they reduce usage. This is also good for the environment; reduced use of nitrogen-containing fertilizers lowers emissions of Nitrous Oxide, a greenhouse gas that is 300x more potent than Carbon Dioxide.
The new funding will be used by Agreed Earth to develop reference clients in the UK, where the addressable market for their services is estimated to be £800m. 25% of greenhouse gas emissions come from agriculture and reducing them is a global challenge. The company plans to expand across Europe, and to the US, in order to exploit the £81 bn market this represents.
This latest round of funding was led by Regenerate Ventures a VC that specialises in investing in companies that have technologies to help farmers produce food with less impact on the environment. It was supported with participation from Carbon 13.
Paul Rous, MD at Regenerate Ventures said, “Agreed Earth has combined a unique set of technologies and knowledge, including satellite data and data analytics, to provide the solution to a massively misunderstood issue. Everyone wants to reduce the greenhouse gases emitted by farms, but the focus has been on methane from cows and CO2 from machinery. Nitrous Oxide from fertilizers constitutes 55% of the problem, but it has been ignored. The Agreed Earth team have produced a platform that provides a unique mix of services to solve a global problem. Well-targeted money is essential to driving the changes that will transform agriculture and save the planet, and Agreed Earth will help free it up”
Kelly Price, Co-founder and CEO of Agreed Earth said, “Agreed Earth is passionate about supporting farmers as they transition to more sustainable, regenerative farming practices. Our core team has combined knowledge of soil science, satellite technology and change management to a develop a platform that spans two very different industries, farming and banking. We needed a funding partner with an intimate understanding of both. Regenerate Ventures fitted that description, and we are delighted that they will help us achieve our mission.”
