Advice to check alternaria affected crops frequently - BBRO Crop Bulletin
Yellow crops harvesting sequences
A number of crops have developed yellow foliage this autumn. It is most obvious in crops that have not received a fungicide spray or only one spray. In the latter case the oldest and newest leaves often appear least affected. Whilst this phenomenum appears, at the moment, to be variety related, the exact cause is not currently understood, but the worry is that alternaria is starting to infect affected plants.
Therefore, the advice is to check affected crops frequently and, if alternaria is starting to invade, harvest those fields as soon as possible, before any unaffected crops. If left, the alternaria can cause serious rotting of roots and consequential yield lost. Leaf loss will also affect potential frost protection benefits later in the season too.
