2025 Nuffield Farming ‘Next-Gen’ Dairy Scholars announced

The Nuffield Farming Scholarships Trust has announced the appointment of three new Next-Gen dairy Scholars: Isabelle Deacon of Lancashire, Lewis Gibbin of Carmarthenshire and Joe Lyall of Lancashire.

After a successful pilot scheme in 2024, Nuffield Farming has continued the initiative which aims to support the development of young talent in agriculture. Open to those aged 18-24, the programme is open to applicants across the UK with a demonstratable interest in the dairy industry. The scholarships have been funded by The Trehane Trust and the Elizabeth Creak Charitable Trust.

The 2025 Nuffield Farming Next-Gen Scholars are:

Isabelle Deacon

Lancashire-based Isabelle is currently studying for a BSc in Agriculture at Myerscough University Centre and is a third-generation dairy farmer. She hopes to eventually take over the 400-cow herd and is currently responsible for calf rearing and herd management. Isabella recently completed the RABDF Entrepreneurs in Dairying course and is looking forward to expanding her knowledge further by visiting a wide range of farm systems and businesses.

Lewis Gibbin

Harper Adams University student Lewis grew up on a dairy farm in Carmarthenshire and is currently undertaking a placement at Huddlestone Farms. A committed Young Farmer and member of Holstein Young Breeders, he hopes to bring new ideas to drive growth back to his home farm. During his Scholarship, he hopes to learn more about sustainable, profitable farming practices and what drives success.

Joe Lyall

Joe grew up on a dairy farm in Cumbria and is currently studying for a MEnvSci in Environmental Science at the University of Manchester. He is currently undertaking a placement year as a Land Management Projects Assistant at the Rivers Trust and hopes to continue in a role that works alongside farmers after he graduates. Joe is looking forward to building connections with other dairy farmers across the country and learning more about the relationship between dairy farmers and environmental NGOs.

The Next-Gen Scholars will take part in a 30-day study programme later this year, visiting dairy farms and businesses across the UK. They will have the opportunity to develop their understanding of the industry, while also building networks and future opportunities. Their Scholarships will culminate at the 2025 Nuffield Farming Conference in Aberdeen, where they will share the learnings from their Scholarship.

"We received a number of high-quality applications and the three recipients all displayed a clear passion for the industry and a desire to be a positive part of its future," says Tom Rawson, Chair of the Nuffield Farming Scholarship Trust. "Our Next-Gen Scholars will gain valuable knowledge and experience during their study tour, and we believe it will provide a vital stepping stone for their future careers in the dairy sector."
